Starting with the iPhone 6S, Apple introduced the 3D Touch technology which enables users to bring up quick commands on the phone simply by increasing the pressure their fingers have on the screen. This enabled many users to access quick commands without the need to go into the app and look for it. It also introduced pressing down the left-hand side of the screen in order to open the multi-tasking screen where users can switch between apps on the fly.
If you've updated to iOS 11 however - the latest iteration of Apple's firmware, you're in trouble.
According to 9To5Mac, Apple has removed the 3D Touch's ability to open up the multi-tasking window. This was brought to light by Twitter user Bryan Irace who filed a Radar about the sudden disappearance of the gesture. Turns out, an Apple engineer's response said that the feature was intentionally removed.
So, what do we do to bring up the app switching/multi-tasking screen you ask? Here's one of the work arounds we've found.
1. Open Up Settings
2. Go to General > Accessibility
3. In Accessibility, go to AssistiveTouch near the bottom
4. Turn on AssistiveTouch then go to "Customize Top Level Menu"
5. Inside this screen, press the subtract button until only one icon is left.
6. You should be left with an icon that says "Custom" tap on it
7. After tapping on it, you'll be met with a series of options.
8. From these set of options select "Multitasking" then select "Done"
9. Now you can bring up the Multitasking screen by tapping on AssistiveTouch
Many users who updated to iOS 11 may have been surprised at its disappearance with some even taking to the Apple forums to complain about it. And it seems that Apple has heard their requests! According to the Verge, Apple executive Craig Federighi has confirmed that the 3D Touch gesture will be making a comeback in a future iOS 11 software update.
